'United Sounds of America: Austin'

Symphony Center, June 18 The grand finale of Symphony Center's musical road trip culminated with the sounds of Austin, in a sweeping concert curated by Alejandro Escovedo. The singer-songwriter (and colleagues) traced roughly a century of Austin's music, from church songs to blues laments, country waltzes to idiosyncratic ballads. But this was more than just a high-concept affair, for Escovedo convened a strong cast of musicians, among them Rosie Flores, Butch Hancock, Roky Erickson and Cindy Cashdollar. Austin never sounded more potent or poignant -- at least not in Chicago.
