Leopold's Underwood typewriter, 1924

Leopold's Underwood portable typewriter, a key piece of evidence in solving the Leopold and Loeb case. Univ. of Chicago graduate students Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb set out to commit the "perfect" slaying and killed a random fourteen-year-old. Leopold twisted off many of the keys with pliers in an attempt to prevent the typewriter from being traced to him. Tribune archive photo
