A 12-year-old boy was wounded when a gunman in a car apparently missed his intended target and shot the boy in the leg as he rode a bicycle in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side, police said.
The boy was one of three people shot in the neighborhood -- and among seven people shot across the city -- between Thursday afternoon and early Friday, according to police. The shooting included two robberies in the Ukranian Village neighborhood that may have involved the same gunman, police said.
The boy in the Back of the Yards was on his bicycle around 6 p.m. when someone in a red two-door car opened fire near 50th and Peoria streets and sped off, police said. The 12-year-old was taken to Provident Hospital of Cook County with a wound to the leg.
In the same neighborhood, a 22-year-old man was shot in the back around noon as he stood on the corner of 48th Street and Winchester Avenue, police said. The man “had no idea” why he was shot, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
About ten minutes after midnight Friday, a 24-year-old man was standing in the 4800 block of South Bishop Street when he heard shots and felt pain -- the third shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood in about 12 hours. He was taken to Stroger Hospital with a wound to his foot and was stable, police said.
In other shootings:
• In Ukrainian Village, a 30-year-old woman was shot in the hip just north of Augusta Boulevard on Damen Avenue during a robbery around 1:25 a.m., police said. She was in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. Police recovered two shell casings near the corner of the August and Damen.
About a block north a few minutes later, a 27-year-old man was shot in the face during a robbery in the 2100 block of West Thomas Street about 1:30 a.m., police said. Someone approached the man from behind, demanded his backpack and shot him. The man was stable at Stroger Hospital.
Police later sent out an alert regarding the robberies, implying that they suspect one man in both incidents but giving no further details about the attacks, except a description of the robber. He is described as a black man, between the ages of 20 and 35, standing between 5-foot-7 and 6 feet tall, weighing 150 to 180 pounds and wearing dark clothing.
Anyone with information on the robberies is asked to call Central Area detectives at 312-747-8380.
