A Justice man was held in lieu of $1 million bail today following a fatal crash Saturday that left one person dead and three others in critical condition.
Sam Cafi, 28, of the 8300 block of South 79th Street in the southwest suburb, appeared in Bridgeview bond court today, according to a release from the Cook County Sheriff's office.
Cafi has been charged with several counts of felony driving under the influence, including DUI resulting in the death of Ryan Osowski, 28, of the 7500 block of Farmingdale Drive in Darien, authorities said.
Around 2 a.m. Saturday, Cafi was traveling west on 95th Street at high speed when he hit a vehicle that was traveling south on La Grange Road, causing it to flip several times and stop in the westbound lanes of 95th Street, the release said. The driver was the only occupant and he was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, police said.
Three passengers in Cafi's vehicle, including Osowski, a front seat passenger, were ejected from the vehicle. Two remain hospitalized at Christ Medical Center today.
Witnesses on the scene told police that Cafi got out of his vehicle after the crash and made statements that he had been drinking at a nearby bar with the passengers in his vehicle. He was administered a field sobriety test as well as a breathalyzer test, both of which showed alcohol intoxication, the statement said.
An autopsy Sunday determined Osowski died of multiple injuries from the wreck, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. Osowski was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center.
