A man died after emergency crews pulled him from his home during a fire in Crystal Lake this morning that involved suspicious circumstances, authorities said.
The man died following a fire at a home in the 7:30 a.m. in the 1700 block of Moorland Lane in the northwest suburb, according to a release from Crystal Lake police. He was identified as Dunn Mizell, 49, who lived at the home, according to the McHenry County coroner's office.
No one else was injured. Information on whether the man died from fire-related injuries or some other cause was not being released today. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, according to the coroner's office.
Police responded to the home after a McHenry County Sheriff's deputy discovered something suspicious and when they arrived, officers were able to see the man on the floor of a room inside the house, which was filled with smoke, police said.
Officers got into the home and tried to get to the man to rescue him from the fire, but heat and smoke kept them from getting close enough to him. Firefighters who arrived soon after were able to pull the man from the home and tried to revive him, police said.
Firefighters also were able to quickly put out the fire in the home's basement.
The man was taken to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock, where he was declared dead.
Crystal Lake police and fire officials, as well as McHenry County Sheriff and coroner and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's office were investigating.
