Inauguration 101: Odds and ends

President Dwight Eisenhower warmly welcomed President-elect John F. Kennedy for a White House visit in December 1960. What's the proper attire? The swearing-in ceremony and parade are outside, and it's typically pretty cold in the District in January. Visitors should wear warm clothes in layers. The balls are formal affairs, kind of like a prom for adults, but even at those events, there are long lines for admission, drinks and food--and typically no seating in the ballrooms. What's the theme? "A New Birth of Freedom" is the 2009 inauguration theme, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. AP photo
