Get in on the act
Impress your date by surrendering your life onstage in the name of entertainment. Your Sunday afternoon begins at 2 p.m. with an all-ages (read: kid-friendly) Vaudeville Magic show with Sean Masterson at the Morse Theater (1328 W. Morse Ave., 773-654-5100; $10 adults, $7 kids). Magic and theater meld in routines based on Hamlet, The Frog Prince and a Jorge Luis Borges story that calls for a member of the audience to be chained to a metal box.
The showing off continues that evening at Heartland Cafe (7000 N. Glenwood Ave., 773-465-8005, free), where the 7 p.m. monthly Guitar Friends recital is open to anyone with an instrument.
Whether you eat before the strum session or after, Vettel says you can stay put for food at Heartland Cafe itself, but in keeping with the DIY theme he recommends Tango Sur (3763 N. Southport Ave., 773-477-5466), where you can cook (or at least keep warm) your steak over baby hibachis. And don't forget to Bring Your Own (the ultimate DIY for imbibers); Tango Sur has no liquor license.
