NAVY WATER POLO: Former Navy water polo head coach Mike Schofield will join an elite group of collegiate water polo figures as a member of the Collegiate Water Polo Association Hall of Fame induction Class of 2014, the organization announced on Tuesday. The head coach of the Mids for 28 years, Schofield will be honored during the 2014 CWPA Championship on Nov. 21-23 at Lejeune Hall in Annapolis.
He becomes the 26th inductee into the CWPA Hall of Fame. He is the sixth inductee to join the Hall of Fame exclusively on coaching talents. Amongst Naval Academy greats he is the second CWPA Hall of Fame inductee to showcase their talents for the Blue and Gold, joining 2008 selection Tom Popp.
During Schofield's time coaching the Mids, he led the program to nine CWPA/Eastern Championships and 13 NCAA tournament appearances. Twenty-one Navy athletes earned 31 All-America honors under Schofield, and Navy was represented on the All-America team in each of the last 14 years of his career.
He finished his career at the Naval Academy in September of 2013 as the school's all-time winningest coach, compiling 631 wins.
NAVY WOMEN'S TRACK: Twenty Mids were named to the 2014 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, announced by the league office Wednesday.
To be eligible for the Spring Academic Honor Roll, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 grade-point average during the spring semester and participate in one of the Patriot League's winter or spring championship sports.
Six Navy track and field members tallied a perfect 4.0 GPA for the spring semester, which included rising seniors Sarah Bernhardt, Shannon Cuthbert and Emily Jensen, rising junior Margo Darragh and rising sophomores Tahler Bandarra and Erin Seiffert.
Other Mids included: Lily Brose, Amanda Graham, Meghan Harvey, Mary Jordan, Dale Lescher, Kelly Maw, Crystan McLymore, Michelle Nelson, Morgan O'Connor, Sierra Parks, Mary Cate Scully, Christina Shawver, Rachel Slater and Madeline Zell.
NAVY MEN'S TRACK: Twenty-three Midshipmen were to the 2014 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, announced by the league office Wednesday. The 23 Mids are tied for the second most for Navy since 2004.
Headlining Navy's 23-man group are recent graduate Brett Bogaardand rising senior Thomas Buffone as both Mids recorded perfect 4.0 GPAs for the spring semester. Bogaard and Buffone were recently named to the 2014 CoSIDA Academic All-District II Team for cross country/track and field. Bogaard graduated with 3.95 GPA while majoring in quantitative economics and Buffone currently holds a perfect 4.00 GPA through his first six semesters at the Naval Academy.
