The Cubs called up Iowa outfielder Brad Snyder on Sunday to replace Reed Johnson, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of continuing back problems.
Also on Sunday, catcher Geovany Soto was activated from the disabled list and Welington Castillo was returned to Iowa. Soto, however, was not in Sunday's potential starting lineup. Soto has missed two weeks because of a strained groin muscle.
In another roster move, the Cubs placed pitcher Andrew Cashner on the 60-day DL. He has missed most of this season with shoulder problems.
Snyder, 29, was hitting .342 with seven homers and 29 RBI in 38 at Iowa.
