T-Mobile USA Inc. launched its 4G LTE network in seven metropolitan areas Tuesday, including Baltimore and Washington.
The wireless company, which also launched the network in Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix and San Jose, Calif., said it is expected to reach 100 million Americans by midyear and 200 million by the end of the year.
The deployment will complement T-Mobile's existing nationwide 4G network, the company said, with T-Mobile 4G LTE devices automatically able to transition to the nationwide network in areas where LTE has not yet launched.
In the Baltimore area, sites covered by 4G LTE include M&T Bank Stadium, Oriole Park at Camden Yards and the Inner Harbor.
The wireless company also said it is attempting to simplify its consumer rate plans by offering one plan for unlimited talk, text and web and will eliminate what it says are restrictive annual service contracts that typically lock consumers in for two years. The changes will allow customers to choose from an array of smartphones at any time for an upfront cost, T-Mobile said.
"This is an industry filled with ridiculously confusing contracts, limits on how much data you can use or when you can upgrade, and monthly bills that make little sense," John Legere, president and CEO of T-Mobile, said in a statement. "We are changing all of that and bringing common sense to wireless."
T-Mobile also announced that qualifying customers can buy an iPhone 5 for $99.99 down plus monthly payments when the company begins offering the phone April 12.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
