Zzzz Best, San Fernando Valley, Calif. As a high school kid operating out of his parents’ garage, Minkow built a carpet cleaning business he eventually turned into a publicly traded company with 1,400 employees before its 1987 implosion. He bilked investors out of an estimated $100 million and was sentenced to 25 years in prison but was released in 1995.
