Market Basket: A 'resurgence' in Roseland
Not in a downtown area, either, where a restaurant can attract employees, visitors and residents.
Weiss wanted a location in Roseland.
So a couple of weeks ago, she opened Weiss' Gasthaus at 115 Dixie Way. And already, many area diners are visiting the restaurant for authentic German cuisine.
You know, schnitzel, spaetzle and bratwurst with sauerkraut.
Weiss' Gasthaus, which seats 46 and has music playing direct from a German radio station, is different from most other South Bend-Mishawaka restaurants in ambiance and cuisine. Moser's Austrian Cafe is the closest competitor, Weiss says, and that restaurant is in New Carlisle.
Why was she completely sold on Roseland?
"We looked at the apartments going in at University Edge, and we thought that for every student there are parents. So even if the students aren't interested in German food, their parents might be," Weiss says.
The native of Mainz, Germany, also considered the commercial development she saw taking place.
"There are all the hotels, and new hotels, and so much traffic and so many people who pass it by," Weiss says. "The rent is way too expensive on Main and Grape. And people talked about Roseland as the place to be."
Exit 77 is considered the busiest and most-used exit along the entire Indiana Toll Road, says Rob DeCleene, executive director of Visit South Bend Mishawaka.
DeCleene is pleased to see recent activity along the entire 933 corridor, with much of the construction and new openings happening right in Roseland.
Here are some other recent commercial projects:
Austin Kuhl recently opened the Blue Zoo at 401 Dixie Way. The exotic pet store carries saltwater and freshwater fish, corals, live rock, reptiles, sugar gliders birds and other animals.
"Some of the best real estate in town is in Roseland," says Kuhl, who acknowledged how affordable storefronts are along the corridor.
World's Famous BBQ, which was formerly located on South Bend Avenue, South Bend, is planning to open at 135 Dixie Way, north of Heaven & Earth.
The nearby Bob Evans restaurant at 204 Dixie Way recently completed a restaurant remodel.
Motel 6 is coming to former Knight's Inn property.
