Home being built in Rising Sun for injured veteran

Homes for Our Troops, a nation-wide nonprofit that builds homes for service members who have been severely injured in combat since Sept. 11, 2001, is breaking ground on a home in Rising Sun on Sunday at 10 a.m.

The home is for Marine Cpl. Jeffrey Kessler, his wife and their two sons.

Kessler lost both of his legs above the knee when he stepped on an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan’s Helmand province in June of 2011. The bomb blast also caused him to lose portions of fingers on his right hand. It was his third deployment, according to Homes for Our Troops.

The home is designed to provide Kessler with “maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently,” the non-profit said.

Homes for Our Troops was founded in 2004 and is based in Taunton, Mass. All of the organization’s homes are built at no cost to the veteran receiving the property.

The public is invited to attend the groundbreaking at 1226 Ridge Road in Rising Sun. To learn more about Homes for Our Troops and Cpl. Kessler, visit: https://www.hfotusa.org/kessler.
