Two of the area's Habitat for Humanity groups said Wednesday they plan to merge this fall, a move designed to ease fundraising and the coordination of volunteers.
The combined organization is to take the name of the Halethorpe-based Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake, with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity's 10-person team absorbed into the larger, 70-person organization.
Chesapeake CEO Mike Posko, who is to continue to lead the affiliate, said the merger will reduce confusion among donors and volunteers, who were previously torn between the two groups.
"There was always a delicate dance we kind of had to do around all that," Posko said. "It just makes it much easier."
The Chesapeake Habitat affiliate completes about $10 million in construction a year, or about 40 homes, offering qualified families with limited incomes homeownership classes and houses with low-cost mortgages, Posko said. It also sells low-cost furnishings and building supplies at five stores in the region.
The Sandtown building will remain open as a satellite office, Posko said, with the organization working in Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, Baltimore and Howard counties.
