Presbyterian Home of Maryland, a nursing home and assisted living facility in Towson, wants to develop a continuing care retirement community in Bel Air, a first for Harford County, the organization announced Tuesday.
The group, a faith-based not-for-profit organization, plans a roughly 58-acre development, with space for up to 700 units on Fountain Green Road in Bel Air.
About 200 units, a mix of independent living, assisted listing and skilled nursing apartments are planned for phase 1, estimated to cost more than $50 million, said Joseph F. Snee Jr., Presbyterian Home of Maryland's attorney.
“Presbyterian Home of Maryland has a strong legacy of providing compassionate care for seniors for over 130 years,” said Susan Shea, president and CEO of Presbyterian Home of Maryland, in the announcement. “We look forward to creating a new community to meet the evolving expectations of today’s seniors and to expand our mission to Harford County, which we believe is underserved in retirement living options.”
Presbyterian Home of Maryland put forward a similar proposal in 2003 in Aberdeen, which it abandoned in 2011 after failed negotiations with local officials over tax breaks. Shea said it is too early to say whether the organization will seek subsidies for this project, which would cater to adults age 60 and up.
The continuing care retirement community is part of a larger development planned for the 152-acre parcel, which is under contract by Elm Street Development, Snee said.
Elm Street, a residential community developer based in McLean, Va., plans to build 120 single-family homes for the rest of the parcel. It agreed to sell Presbyterian Home the acreage for the continuing care retirement community, Shea said. Terms were not disclosed.
The project is in the beginning phases and requires a number of different approvals, Shea said. A community meeting will be held Monday.
