The Robert W. Deutsch Foundation has closed on its new headquarters building on North Charles Street, currently occupied by the Afro-American newspaper, the foundation said Thursday.
The terms of the sale of the building at 2519 N. Charles St. were not disclosed.
The foundation, which provides grants to improve the quality of life in Baltimore and elsewhere, was founded in 1991 and plans to redevelop the 17,000-square-foot Charles Village building by 2019.
“Over the last seven years, the Deutsch Foundation has turned its focus to the city of Baltimore,” Jane Brown, the foundation’s president and executive director, said in a statement. “This move allows us to be closer to the programs and people we support. We envision a mix of tenants in this space.”
The foundation focuses in areas including arts, social justice, education, youth development, digital equality and independent media.
Plans for The Afro were not immediately clear.
