Already one such "Twice the Ice" machine can be found in El Centro, at the southeast corner of the intersection of Eighth Street and Broadway. Twenty pounds of ice are available for $2.50. The vending machine provides a bag upon purchase, and customers also have the option of filling their ice chests directly from the machine.
Vending machines are planned to be installed in Calexico, Heber, Imperial, Brawley and Imperial in the near future, said Jason Cleghorn, compliance director for the company.
The vending machine operates 24 hours a day and is serviced for maintenance up to three times a week.
On Friday, a representative could be found giving away T-shirts, koozies, coupons and free ice. Ice House America manufactures the machine in Moultrie, Ga., and Trademark Construction in El Centro was contracted to install it.
The Jacksonville, Fla.,-based company was founded in 2002 and has about 15 similar vending machines throughout California, with a total of 2,500 in the nation.
Packaged ice is said to represent a $4 billion industry, according to the company’s website.
