BGE was founded in 1816 as the first gas utility in the United States, and it brought light in the form of burning gas to Baltimore's streets. BGE is a division of Constellation Energy Group, one of the largest sellers of wholesale power in the nation. BGE's rates -- specifically, a projected rate increase of 72% -- were a contentious issue during the 2006 Maryland gubernatorial race between incumbent Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. and challenger Martin O'Malley.
