Andre Hinson, 47, was waiting for his teen-aged son and daughter outside the Express store at the Mall in Columbia.
Hinson said it was his first Black Friday, but he noted that the rest of his family had been out shopping Thursday night as well picking up shoes and bags. "They started out at 9 o'clock last night and are starting back up again," he explained, adding he was part of the "change of shift."
He'd just spent an hour and a half in line to buy a shirt, but said it was worth it because it was a good deal. The family has recently moved to Columbia and he was at the mall looking for specials. Asked if he'd be spending more or less this year than in holidays past, Hinson gave a look of relief when 14-year-old Imani piped up that she figured the family would spend a little less on holiday gifts this year.
"That's good to hear," he said. She's in high school, he explained, and his son was in college.
