Safeway Inc. has launched a gas rewards program with ExxonMobil.
Grocery customers can earn points for most items at Safeway stores in the Mid-Atlantic and redeem the points at the pump at participating Exxon and Mobil stations, the supermarket chain is announcing today.
"By teaming up with ExxonMobil, we’re able to thank our customers with a loyalty program that makes two frequent and critical purchases lead to real savings," Mir Aamir, Safeway’s president of customer loyalty, said in a statement.
The grocer said a consumer survey showed nearly three of four people will drive out of their way to purchase more affordable gas.
Safeway customers who use a Safeway Club Card will earn one point per $1 spent on groceries, two points per $1 spent on qualifying gift cards and one point per $1 for eligible pharmacy items.
For every 100 points earned, shoppers get a discount of 10 cents per gallon at Exxon or Mobil stations by swiping a club card or entering a phone number before fueling up.
Rival grocer Giant of Maryland offers a similar reward program at participating Shell gas stations.
