STX LLC , the Baltimore-based lacrosse equipment maker, is starting a women's lacrosse team for recent college grads and launching a Web series to document events leading to the inaugural season. 

Hoping to boost brand awareness and advance the growth of the nation's fastest growing team sport, the Pigtown-based company is seeking top female athletes for the "elite level" STX team. In the first round, the company will select three team captains.

The winners, who can be from anywhere in the U.S. but who will live together in Baltimore in STX-provided housing, will be featured in the original web series, "Love for the Game." The series, expected to launch early next year on the STX website, will follow the captains as they train and lead the new team. The captains will help organize and recruit for tryouts, set up the season schedule and design uniforms. They also will appear in STX ads as the faces of STX lacrosse. Team tryouts will be held early next summer to pick 20 to 25 players.

"This is an opportunity for anybody who is a recent graduate to be able to play and stay connected in the lacrosse world," said Emily Hughes, women's brand manager for lacrosse and field hockey for STX.

Hughes said the company expects the STX team to participate in tournaments in the mid-Atlantic and play college teams in exhibition games, mainly during the summer.

STX, which makes equipment for lacrosse, field hockey and golf, is best known for ushering in the modern era of lacrosse in 1970 with the introduction of the first synthetic lacrosse head.

Applicants for team captain must be recent female college graduates who played lacrosse in college and who are no longer eligible to play NCAA sports.
