As a lover of doughnuts, I'm surprised I didn't know this. But apparently, National Doughnut Day is today. It's an annual holiday that goes back to 1938 as -- according to different sources -- a fundraiser or to honor the women of the Salvation Army who served doughnuts during WWI, or both.
Anyway, what's most relevant today is that some doughnut shops are offering freebies today. Dunkin' Donuts, for example, is offering a free doughnut with the purchase of a beverage at participating stores. I tried to find which of the participating stores are in Maryland, but the retailer's website just didn't cooperate.
Krispy Kreme also is offering free doughnuts at its store at Falls Grove Village Center, 14919 Shady Grove Rd., in Rockville.
If you really want a free pastry, you might be best off calling your favorite doughnut shop and see if they are getting into the celebration today.
