There are so many made-up days of celebration or awareness — National Mayonnaise Day or Annual Broccoli Week — that I don’t even pay attention to them anymore.

But something caught my eye when the BBB of Greater Maryland sent out a release on Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26th.

If you have an American Express card and use it to spend $25 or more at a small business on that Saturday, the credit card company will credit your account with $25 later. The company’s generosity only goes so far. The offer is good for the first 200,000 cards registered. Registration started Nov. 1, and at the moment I’m writing this, American Express says it is still registering cards.

The site also lets you plug in your zip code and calls up a list of small independent businesses in your area that accept American Express plastic. It’s the second year in the row that American Express has offered this incentive to encourage consumers to shop at small businesses.

Apparently, FedEx also was offering $25 American Express gift cards to use at small businesses on Small Business Saturday. But when I checked it out today, FedEx was already out of cards.
