Amazon is expanding same-day delivery service in the Baltimore area and five other metropolitan areas, the online retailer said Wednesday.
Through "Get It Today," customers can order from more than a million eligible items as late as noon, seven days a week, for home delivery the same day.
The service, launched Wednesday, is being expanded as well in the Washington, Philadelphia, New York City, Dallas and Indianapolis metro areas.
Available items include movies, video games and back-to-school supplies -- look for the "Get It Today" filter on the left navigation panel on Amazon's website. Or if you can wait until tomorrow, click on the "Get it by Tomorrow" filter, for next-day items.
The Seattle-based online giant has been building more distribution centers as it aims to move closer to customers and become more competitive with deliveries.
It's building a 1 million-square-foot warehouse that will employ 1,000 workers in Southeast Baltimore, at the site of the former General Motors plant. The facility is expected to open next spring, not this year as originally estimated. An Amazon spokeswoman said the company can offer same-day delivery now in Baltimore through the existing network but will expand selection as more warehouses open.
The expanded same-day delivery is available for household goods, health and beauty and baby items, toys, movies, games, electronics, office supplies, sporting goods, apparel and home accessories.
Prime members pay $5.99 regardless of order size.
This is Amazon's East Coast rollout. Expanded service is offered already in the Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle metro areas.
