Discount grocer Aldi will reopen its Baltimore city store Thursday after remodeling it with an updated look and easier-to-navigate layout.

The store, at 3250 E. Fayette St., was closed temporarily for renovations and will have higher ceilings, more natural lighting and "green" and recycled building materials, the chain said in an announcement.

The retailer is known for exclusive brands sold at a discount, and promises prices of up to 50 percent off national brands.

"We are pleased to showcase the new look of ALDI with this updated store in Baltimore and continue to help customers stretch their dollars," Jeff Baehr, the Frederick division vice president for ALDI, said in the announcement.

An opening ceremony will kick off at 9 a.m. Thursday, when shoppers can sample products and enter sweepstakes to win gift certificates.

The fast-growing, 1,300-store chain says it keeps overhead costs low by running small stores with open carton displays and encouraging shoppers to bring their own bags.
