TSA seizes record number of guns in 2013

The Transportation Security Administration identified and seized more firearms at U.S. airports in 2013 than in any year since records have been kept — including more than two dozen at airports in the Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area.

Nationwide, the TSA caught 1,813 guns at airport checkpoints in 2013, a 16.5 percent increase over the 1,556 guns it captured in 2012, it announced Friday.

The TSA screened nearly 639 million passengers in 2013, about 1.1 million more than last year.

Of the 1,813 guns located, in carry-ons and on fliers' bodies, 1,477 — or more than 80 percent — were loaded, the TSA said.

A total of 13 guns were caught at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. Eight were caught at Washington Dulles International Airport and 6 at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.

The airports with the most guns caught in 2013 were Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (111); Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (96); George Bush Intercontinental National Airport in Houston (68); Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (66); and Denver International Airport (51).
