Under Armour's proposal to double the size of its Locust Point headquarters in South Baltimore has been sent to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake for final approval.
The Baltimore City Council on Monday night approved changes that would allow the $1 billion global sports apparel company to build a new office tower and the city's first Under Armour store and expand other office buildings on its waterfront campus.
The mayor is supporting a request from the city's economic development agency for up to $35 million in city tax increment financing for infrastructure projects near the campus, a mayoral spokesman said Tuesday. That request from the Baltimore Development Corp. will be heard by the city Board of Finance and then the City Council starting in May. The financing would help pay for street and promenade upgrades, new athletic fields for the company and the public and a biking hiking path to connect to Key Highway.
The zoning changes approved by the council Monday, in the form of amendments to the planned unit development, allow for company expansion with a maximum office and retail development of nearly 1 million square feet. Under Armour plans to build an 80,000-square-foot office building on the site of the "Tide" building, which would be demolished, and a four-story office and flagship store building. The company now owns or leases five buildings on the 25-acre former Procter & Gamble factory.
