PetSmart and Pet Valu open new stores in Baltimore area

PetSmart opened a store Monday in Ellicott City on Baltimore National Pike.

It's the 15th Baltimore-area store for the retailer, which operates more than 1,500 locations in the U.S.

The opening is the second in the past week for a new pet supply store in the region.

Pet Valu opened a location on Saturday in Dundalk. That store, in Merritt Park Shopping Center on Merritt Boulevard, offers self-serve dog-wash stations, pet toys, treats, accessories, furnishings and other supplies.

The Ellicott City PetSmart features the retailer's new Pinnacle Pet Nutrition department with an expanded assortment of high-protein, natural, grain-free, minimally processed and raw pet food. Besides pet products, the store offers pet training and adoption services and a grooming salon.

A grand opening event is planned at PetSmart for Saturday. The first 50 shoppers will receive gift cards with values ranging form $5 to $50. The store also will give away t-shirts, pet treats, pet toys and discount coupons.
