A Mississippi-based Anheuser-Busch wholesaler has agreed to purchase Winner Distributing Co., the Anheuser-Busch distributor for Baltimore and parts of Baltimore County, and an interest in F. P. Winner Ltd., a distributor in Maryland for brands such as Corona, Pabst and Sierra Nevada.
Mitchell Distributing did not disclose terms of the deal. It plans to operate both Winner and F.P. Winner from a single warehouse instead of two separate facilities.
Winner had notified Maryland's labor department in late January that it was laying off 125 workers at the end of February and closing the warehouse on Canton Center Drive in eastern Baltimore County.
Mitchell is interviewing Winner workers and plans to rehire an as-yet-undetermined number of them, said Kristy Riley, a spokeswoman for the Meridian, Miss.-based distributor.
Mitchell Distributing CEO Manny Mitchell said in a statement the Winner management team, including President Marc M. Winner, would continue to help run the Maryland-based businesses.
"We are excited to work with Marc [Winner] and his team as we invest and grow the brands in this market," said Mitchell.
His company is family-owned with roots dating to the 1940s. The expansion is the company's first outside of Mississippi.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
