The developer of a vacant lot in Charles Village owned by the Johns Hopkins University has decided not to build a grocery store there.
The university supports the decision about the site, at the corner of St. Paul and E. 33rd streets, said a statement released Wednesday by Armada Hoffler, the lead developer of the 1.1-acre site. The other firms involved are Beatty Development Group LLC and Skye Hospitality LLC.
The development group, 3200StPaul, has met with residents of Charles Village and the surrounding communities in recent weeks to solicit their thoughts on how the land should be used.
Some residents expressed concern that a grocery store at the site could put Eddie's Market of Charles Village, one block south, out of business. Eddie's has been operating for more than 50 years.
A parking garage will be part of the plans for the lot, which is limited to structures of 12 or fewer stories.
The development team is continuing "its exploration of the best uses for this mixed-use project," Armada Hoffler said.
