Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. warned Wednesday that scammers are targeting some customers, claiming their power will be shut off unless they make an immediate payment.
The callers, who say they represent BGE, instruct consumers to pay by telephone via a Green Dot Visa prepaid card. BGE said customers should ask any callers claiming to be from the utility for the name on the account, the account address and the precise past-due balance.
BGE said it is launching an anti-impostor educational campaign to help customers avoid scams. In cases where someone shows up in person and claims to be from BGE, the utility said, consumers can call 800-685-0123 to determine whether it's true.
