No. 7: Shoprite

Number of Baltimore-area stores: 12 Baltimore market share: 5.2 percent 2013 Baltimore sales in millions: $242.7 ShopRite expanded further into the area after Superfresh closed its Baltimore stores in 2011. It came into the market a few years earlier as it merged with a longtime Harford County chain. It is part of WakeFern Food Corp., a cooperative of companies that pool their resources to buy food at lower prices. The co-op, based in New Jersey, includes 47 members that own more than 230 ShopRites in six states. Since the stores are individually owned yet still benefit from a large scale, they give customers a family feel with competitive prices.Jen Rynda / Patuxent Publishing
