Financial investment for clients isn't the only kind of investment being done at T. Rowe Price, which employs more than 3,600 associates at its downtown Baltimore headquarters and at a facility in Owings Mills.
The public company, founded in 1937, invests in its workers, too, providing a workplace culture that encourages collaboration to produce the best results for clients, employees say.
"It's not about pay or benefits or work conditions. It's about our values," said Gretchen Park, head of global human resources.
A key value is collaboration through teamwork.
"It's encouraging people to debate openly, embrace different viewpoints, and bring it all out on the table, because that divergent thinking will yield better results for our clients," Park said.
Also, she added, T. Rowe Price doesn't have a star system.
"It's not about trying to make a name for yourself," Park said. "We want our people to work together for the good of the client, and they are rewarded for that collaboration."
Unlike financial companies with "cutthroat" competition among employees, "you don't see too many egos here," said Barrett Wragg, regional investment consultant, third party distribution.
"It's different from a lot of cultures in the financial world," agreed Cheri Belski, manager, retail sales.
During her 15-year tenure, T. Rowe Price paid for Belski to earn a master's degree and provided "great maternity leave" when her two children were born.
Said Belski: "The commitment to our culture and people is what has kept me here."
