Maryland coach Gary Williams said tonight that he is still actively interviewing to fill the assistant coaching job left vacant when Chuck Driesell left to become head coach at the Citadel.
Williams just told me: "I have several people I have to talk to. The search is on."
Maryland has not divulged the candidates' names.
There have been several online reports that Loyola coach Jimmy Patsos has been hired -- or is about to be. Williams said that is incorrect.
Let's be clear. Nobody at Maryland has ruled out Patsos as a candidate, at least not to me. But Maryland says it wouldn't be accurate to say Patsos is "expected" to be named to the post.
Patsos was a Maryland assistant for 13 seasons, including when the Terps claimed the national championship in 2002.
Patsos took over the Loyola program in 2004. The school recently hired a new athletic director, Jim Paquette, who was previously an associate AD at Boston College. Loyola's previous athletic director, Joe Boylan, had served since 1991.
Maryland currently has two assistants -- Robert Ehsan and Keith Booth.
