Orioles director of amateur scouting Joe Jordan gave Dan Connolly a quick scouting report on the two players the Orioles took after Matt Hobgood in Tuesday's first three rounds of the First Year Player Draft.
Mychal Givens (Second round, 54th overall): Givens is a high school pitching/infield prospect from Tampa who was drafted as a shortstop even though his fastball topped out at 97 mph.
Jordan's take: "I don't think he slipped (in the draft). I just think it was one of those things where there was some inventory with high school shortstops. He's going to have a bat and there's power there. We think there's potential for both. He throws 96, 97 off the mound, (but) because of the position he plays, that's something we will definitely try first."
Tyler Townsend (Third round, 85th overall): He's a left-handed hitter out of Florida International University who played right field and first base. He's projected as a left fielder or first baseman as a pro.
Jordan's take: He's thrilled to death he's going to be an Oriole. that's where he wanted to go. we considered him in the second round. The fact that he was there in the third, we feel really good about that....We all love our picks right now, but we got three guys we targeted, and that's a good start in any draft."
