Leading 3-1 in the sixth

Jeremy Guthrie is giving the Orioles exactly what they need.

His pitch count stands at 69 through the fifth. His only lapse came in the fourth on Joe Inglett's leadoff single, David Eckstein's sacrifice, a passed ball and Alex Rios' run-scoring grounder.

Not much of a lapse.

It looked like former Oriole John Parrish might get knocked out early. Three of the first seven batters doubled, including Jay Payton, who drove in a run in the second inning.

Payton tagged up and hustled to third base on Adam Jones' fly ball to left field, and he scored on Brandon Fahey's grounder.

The Orioles must hope that having Brian Roberts tagged out in a rundown in the fifth, and Nick Markakis being picked off first base to end the inning, won't come back to haunt them. Roberts broke for second on an apparent hit-and-run, applied the brakes and was toast.

Two more hits and an RBI for Aubrey Huff.
