Nadastrom It's funny how these weekends take on themes. It's almost like Baltimore's promoters get together in some underground bunker and decide, "This is going to be a folk weekend. Any objections?" This weekend's theme is house. And so house is all over the damn place--the Ottobar, the harbor, Canton. And it's the good stuff, too.
FRIDAY:Throw Me the Statue, something of a quirky, sprawling sibling to the Long Winters' indie pop, is at the Talking Head with folky Page France descendant the Cotton Jones Basket Ride and the Points. 10 p.m. $8.
Baltimore young'uns get maybe their only chance to see local hard rock legend Liquor Bike, reuniting just for tonight at the Ottobar, performing with Landspeedrecord and Pulaski. Also on display at the club is "The Scene," a collection of show fliers from 1988 to 1998 curated by Liquor Bike's David Koslowski.
SATURDAY: Dressy Bessy, so shamelessly pop you'll need to have its hooks scraped out of your skull afterward, is at the Talking Head with the playful bounce of locals Squaaks and a band just called Rock. 10 p.m. $8.
While it costs more than many folks make in a day, the Midnight Groove Cruise is undeniably a very cool thing: classic--read: good and local--house music. On a boat. Performing are Sunshine Jones of Dubtribe, soul DJs Lovegrove, Adam Auburn, Knowledge, live percussion by Zak, the Basement Boys' Teddy Douglas, Scottie B, Chris Brooks, Scott Henry, Logo, and DJ Figment. 10:30 p.m. $75. Lady Baltimore departs from Light and Pratt streets in the Inner Harbor.
Area blues label Severn Records hosts its 10th anniversary party at Fish Head Cantina in Arbutus with performances by Sugar Ray and the Bluetones, Clarence Spady, All Mighty Senators, Lou Pride, Darrell Nulisch, Tad Robinson, Mike Morgan, Big Joe Maher, Steve Guyger, Monster Mike Welch, Alex Schultz, and Benjie Poreck. 2 p.m. $30.
DFA dance/disco/rock star cum house music revivalist the Juan Maclean plays a rare live set at the Ottobar with the local debut of brash Baltimore club DJ Dave Nada's side project Nadastrom, Thrust Lab, and the Tax Lo DJs. 9:30 p.m. $12.
