2006 All-Howard County Girls Indoor Track team

Performer of the YearLiz McCarter, Mount Hebron

If there were a Comeback Performer of the Year award, McCarter would've gotten that one, too.

Two years removed from running off-course at the Howard County championships in cross country, and after overcoming a rash of injuries that included a stress fracture in her back and shin splints, McCarter swept the 800 at the Class 3A-2A state (2 minutes, 21.31 seconds), West regional (2:21.0) and Howard County (2:22.36) levels.

The junior's winning time of 5:17.70 in the 1,600 at the county championships broke the previous meet record of 5:20 shared by Atholton's Carolyn Forde (1981) and River Hill's Beth Santilli (1997). McCarter also captured the 1,600 at the West regional meet in 5:18.6.

Coach of the YearGregory Johnson, Long Reach

It seems that graduation deals a severe blow to the Lightning every year. And without fail, Long Reach simply reloads and continues the tradition of success that the program has built over the decade.

While the team has won eight straight Howard County titles outdoors, the Lightning hadn't claimed the indoor crown since 2001. That all changed this winter, as Long Reach boasted six victories in 15 events and outdistanced the field by a comfortable margin.
