Global Cancer: The Future of Chronic Diseases
April 7, 11:10 a.m. - 12:25 p.m., CCBC Essex
Global Cancer: The Future of Chronic Diseases" will be the subject of the annual Murthy/Reihl Global Education Leadership Lecture to be given by Dr. John D. Groopman. The event will be held from 11:10 a.m. until 12:25 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, in the Administration Building Lecture Hall at CCBC Essex, 7201 Rossville Blvd. in Rosedale.
This annual lecture series is funded by an endowment designated to help the college grow its Global Education program by highlighting international and global leaders in business, government, education and other areas important to CCBC students, faculty and the community. It is named for its major donor, Sheela Murthy, the founder, President and CEO of the Murthy Law Firm (Owings Mills, Md.) to honor her good friend and former CCBC dean of Community Education and Service, Donna Reihl, who passed away in 2011.
This year's speaker, John D. Groopman, Ph.D., professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, will share his research and knowledge regarding the global impact of cancer and the future of chronic illnesses.
"The intent of the Murthy/Reihl Lecture Series is to open the minds and hearts of college students to the importance of global issues, regardless of where they choose to work and what they choose to do," said Sheela Murthy, who was born outside the U.S. and believes that the greatness of America lies in the fact that we invite and encourage immigrants from all over the world to share their talent for a stronger workforce. "The future success of our next generation depends on students realizing the importance of a global economy and embracing it."
The lecture, which will be followed by a question and answer session and a reception, is free and open to the public. CCBC thanks Sheela Murthy for her generosity and leadership to support the largest community college in the area that seeks to educate about 70,000 students who are pursuing either an AA, Bachelor's degree or a Master's degree at CCBC.
