Roland Park academic team falls short in finals

An academic team at Roland Park Elementary/Middle School gained the finals of the National Academic League for the first time, but lost to a team in North Carolina.

The championship between a team of 4th, 5th and 6th graders at Roland Park Elementary/Middle and a team in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district in North Carolina was staged in Baltimore and Charlotte via teleconferencing on April 10.

The Roland Park team competed from the school board meeting room in the Baltimore City public school system’s administration building, on North Avenue.

It was the first time in 21 years that the school had made the finals. Roland Park Elementary/Middle won the city championship Feb. 26.

Eighth-grade social studies teacher Alexandra Fleming, the Roland Park team’s adviser, reported that Roland Park led until the fourth quarter. The final score was 57-48.

“The kids played a great game,” Fleming said in an email. “We are of course very proud of them!”
