Olympians with local ties come up short in kayak, canoe events

Scott Parsons, of Bethesda, failed to advance from the qualifying run of the single kayak event Sunday at the Lee Valley Whitewater Centre.

Parsons, a three-time Olympian, placed 16th with a score of 94.16, which left him 1.59 seconds shy of advancing along with the top 15. He was 10.91 off the pace of Germany's Hannes Aigner, who placed first with a 83.49 on his second run.

Casey Eichfeld -- who is from Drums, Pa., but worked at the Adventure Sports Center International in McHenry -- failed to advance in single canoe. He placed 14th, two places out of qualifying for the semifinals.

His first run, where he posted a score of 97.04, was the better of his two results, but it left him 6.48 off the leader, Michael Martikan of Slovakia, who had a 90.56 on his second run. Eichfeld's result was 0.97 away from 12th place, the cut-off for advancement to the semifinals.
