•••• Remember that proposed “violent video game tax” in Oklahoma? Done-zo. [Geekosystem]
•••• A straw poll at the NBA All-Star game confirms about 85% of pro ballers are gamers. This group includes Dwight Howard, who would like to blow you up in “Call of Duty” so badly that he gave out his gamertag. [Forbes]
•••• The American Psychological Association released a study that has something to do with video games deteriorating players’ attention spans. I’m not totally sure what their conclusions were, as there were no images in the article and I had to take a “Skyrim” break midway through. [Newswise]
On Shelves Tomorrow (Feb. 28)
•••• ”Binary Domain” gets its North American release tomorrow, after a positive reception worldwide for the squad-based shooter. You can actually order your teammates around in this PS3/Xbox 360 title using a headset and verbal commands in six different languages. Sadly, Baltimorese is not one of them, hon.
•••• By my count, “Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition” is the 15th title in the series released in 20 years. Not too shabby. I don’t think I’m spoiling anything when I tell you that this edition has lots of characters, gameplay modes and excessive gore. If you aren’t playing the theme music in your head right now, you can probably skip this release.
•••• Full disclosure: I am not a Japanophile or a big 3DS fan, but if you happen to be both of those things, then “Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2” seems right up your alley.
Connex is a simplistically beautiful game for iOS that feels like the love child of Simon Says, a slot machine, and Lucky Charms cereal. And if that description doesn’t have you rushing to download the free app right now, I don’t know what will. There are ten timed challenges in Connex, each one becoming more complicated as you complete them. I’m up to challenge number eight right now, and it’s simultaneously frustrating and addictive. See if you can do any better this week and let us know in the comments!
Your Face Here!
I’m still seeking out readers to be a part of an introductory series of post we’re calling “Game Faces.” Let’s connect the dots of our local gaming community a little bit and figure out who are the humans behind the “lol pwned u!” messages, shall we? If you’re interested, drop me a line at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Really Important Video
File this clip under “inevitable but still great.” Lana Del Rey’s polarizing indie hit “Video Games” meets Mario, Luigi and a lovesick Princess Peach. If I were Lana Del Rey, I’d be a little concerned that the girl playing Peach in this video has a better voice then me. Bonus points for how they link Luigi’s wiry frame to a distaste of eating pizza every day.
