Nouveau furniture store to move back to Mount Vernon

Nouveau Contemporary Goods is leaving Belvedere Square to return to Baltimore's Mount Vernon neighborhood.

The contemporary furniture store will get a new name too, Nouveau Home & Interior Design, to reflect an expansion into transitional as well as contemporary furnishings, co-owners Steve Appel and Lee Whitehead said. The retailer also will sell accessories and gift items. The retailer's residential and corporate design studio, Whitehead &  Appel, will be renamed Nouveau Interior Design.

The owners have leased 2,300 square feet at 10 W. Eager St., adjacent to City Cafe, and will open in late  October.

For the owners, who live downtown, the move is a return to the store's roots. It started out in its current form  in 1987 at 519 North Charles St. before moving to Belvedere in 2004. Appel said he hopes to tap into urban living trends.

"We are excited to move back downtown because of all the luxury rental apartments that have opened up," Appel said in the announcement. "It's also really cool to see some of the familiar faces from when we were there before. It feels like coming home."

The business, founded by childhood friends Appel and Whitehead,  started in 1986 as a boutique in Howard County's Savage Mill.

The new location will have parking nearby.

Nouveau has begun a moving sale at the Belvedere store on in-stock furniture, rugs, lighting, wall art and accessories. Store hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Check here for more information.
