Down the hatch

Given the neighborhood's lively atmosphere, every hour in Canton is pretty much a happy one. But that doesn't mean we don't appreciate a good bargain. During those few precious hours of the day notorious for cheap drinks and free food, Canton's got plenty of options.

Happy hour: 4-7 p.m. weekdays
If the friendly wait staff and cozy bar doesn't make this place enjoyable enough, the happy hour prices will really make you smile. Draft beer is half price, domestic bottled beer is $1.75, imported bottled beer is $2 and mixed drinks are $2.50. An order of 30 wings and a pitcher of domestic beer is $9.95. The bar offers other non-happy hour drink specials, like $1 Bud Light bottles after 9 p.m. on Sundays and $1 Miller Lite bottles after 9 p.m. on Thursdays.

Happy hour: 4-9 p.m. daily
The happy hours here are generous: All 14 draft beers are $1.25 a pint. Thursday is a great day to come to the Mill because happy hour lasts all night, and you can get an 8-ounce Angus burger for just $2.95. The Mill also has other specials, such as two-for-one drinks on Tuesdays and Ladies' Night on Wednesdays.

Happy hour: 3-7 p.m. weekdays, 1-6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays
Anyplace that offers happy hour prices on the weekend gets our approval. In business for more than 50 years, Kisling's is a Canton stalwart serving some of Baltimore's best bar food and a wide selection of draft beer. Its location is a bit removed from the main square, but it is worth the walk, especially during happy hour when all draft beer is half price, Rolling Rock drafts are $1 and domestic bottled beer is $1.50. Kisling's also discounts appetizers, including its signature chicken wings, during happy hour.

Happy hour: 3-7 p.m.
If you've only got $10 in your pocket, you can afford a night out at Looney's any day of the week. Appetizers are $4, domestic draft beer is $1, imported draft beer is $1.50, domestic bottled beer is $1.50 and imported bottled beer is $2. On Mondays and Tuesdays the same happy hour prices apply after 10 p.m. Looney's supplements its happy-hour bargains with so many other specials it's hard to keep track. For example, there are two-for-one specials on Miller Lite or Bud Light on Wednesday and Thursdays after 9 p.m.; $1 Miller Lite drafts until 6 p.m. on Saturday and all day on Sunday; reduced-price burgers on Tuesday nights and a $10.95 lobster dinner on Thursday nights. All non-happy hour drink specials kick in after 7 p.m., food specials after 5 p.m.
