Player of the Year: Kristen Malloy, Hereford
Malloy had a great season last year beforefinishing third in the state meet. This year wasmuch different. She set a meet record at theBull Run Invitational for the second straightyear and had a nearly perfect season. Thejunior capped it by winning the BaltimoreCounty, regional and Class 3A state titles.
She was challenged once again in the statemeet, needing a strong kick in the final .1 of amile to outlast Howard's Elyse Borisko,whohad finished second in last year's race.
Sara Bailey, C. Milton Wright
Bailey anchored theMustangs' run to the Class 4Astate championship.
The senior was consistent allseason, running especially well inthe state championship race, asher seventh-place effort helpedC.M.Wright edge EleanorRoosevelt of Prince George'sCounty by one point.
Elyse Borisko, Howard
Borisko just missed winning anindividual state title this year,losing to Hereford's KristenMalloy in the final .1 of a mile in theClass 3A state meet. She finishedthird in last year's Class 2A staterace and kept improving this year.
The junior helped the Lionstake this fall's Class 3A state title.She also ran well in several bigmeets, winning the Class 3A Eastregional, taking second in theHoward County championshipsand third at Bull Run.
Katie Harman, River Hill
She had to battle some injuryproblems midway through theseason but bounced back to finishstrongly, sweeping the HowardCounty,Class 2A South regionaland state championships.
The junior edged Howard'sElyse Borisko on a cold, rainy dayat the Howard County meet androlled from there. Harman playeda huge role in River Hill's girlscapturing the Class 2A state title.
Liya Kasimova, Severna Park
The senior ended her highschool cross country career on abit of a down note with a15th-place finish in the Class 4Astate meet one week afterwinning the East regional. Shefinished second at the AnneArundel County championships.
Kasimova also took second inthe Knights Invitational and Disney Invitational and was fifth inthe Bull Run at Hereford.
Emma Larkin, Dulaney
Larkin came back strong aftermissing much of last fall with injuryproblems. The senior anchoredthe Dulaney lineup and played abig role in the Lions winning the Baltimore County championshipand finishing third in the Class 4Astate meet.
She was second in both thecounty and North regional racesbefore her 10th-place finish in thetough Class 4A state race.
Hillary Lee, South River
Lee followed up a fine debutas a freshman with another strongseason.Her best effort mighthave been at the Anne ArundelCounty championships, whichshe won in 19 minutes, 36seconds.
The sophomore followed thatwith a second-place effort at theClass 4A East regional and an11th-place finish in the state meet.
Maura Linde, Century
Linde began her varsity careerin style. The freshman ran wellearly in the season, then took offin the second half.
She placed 29th in theHoward County Invitational and59th in Bull Run. Later in theseason, she finished third in theMonocacy Valley Athletic Leaguechampionships and won the Carroll County title and the Class2A West regional crown. Lindethen ran a strong race in badweather at states, finishing secondin 19 minutes, 59 seconds.
Erika Stasakova, John Carroll
The senior developed into oneof the area's top runners duringher career at John Carroll andmade her final season amemorable one. Stasakovaposted a string of victories at bigmeets (Bobcat Invitational, DisneyInvitational, private schools statechampionship, InterscholasticAthletic Association of MarylandA Conference championship).She finished second in the IAAMoverall championship.
Maeve Ricaurte, Glenelg
Ricaurte was a strong runnerall season but turned in her bestperformance in the IAAMchampionship race. That's whenthe B Conference runner finishedfirst overall in 19 minutes, 1 second,beating A Conference rival ErikaStasakova of John Carroll by nineseconds. Ricaurte, a junior, thentook third at the private schoolsstate championships. She played amajor role in the Dragons goingundefeated to take theB Conference regular-season title.
