Timothy E. Ryan

Publisher and Chief Executive Officer

Tim has served as publisher and chief executive officer of the Baltimore Sun Media Group (BSMG) since 2007. In this position, Tim is responsible for an extensive print and digital portfolio of products including The Baltimore Sun and baltimoresun.com as well as two other daily newspapers, 30 community newspapers and magazines and related digital assets. In addition to his role with BSMG, Tim has also served as publisher and CEO for Tribune Publishing's Morning Call Media Group (MCMG) since 2010 with responsibility for the leading newspaper, The Morning Call, and website, mcall.com, in the Lehigh Valley, Pa., area. Tim's media experience includes stints in executive and management positions earlier in his career at The Chicago Tribune and The Philadelphia Inquirer. A native of Rochester, N.Y., he holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame and a master's degree in business administration from J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, Northwestern University.


Triffon G. Alatzas

Senior Vice President, Executive Editor

Trif Alatzas was named senior vice president and executive editor of the Baltimore Sun Media Group in March 2013. An award-winning reporter and editor, Trif has held several roles at The Baltimore Sun since joining the organization in 2002, including Head of Digital Media, Sports Editor and Business Editor. He oversees journalists at The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore Sun Media Group's web and mobile sites, b the weekly, and the company's targeted media division of community newspapers and magazines. Trif led The Sun's newsrooms through the company's successful transition to paid digital subscriptions in 2011. He is credited with bridging the print and online divisions of the newsroom and ensuring The Sun's journalists have an array of skills to maneuver between digital and print platforms seamlessly. He also developed and drove the editorial strategy in BSMG's 2014 acquisitions of The Annapolis Capital and The Carroll County Times. Trif received a master's degree in public affairs reporting from the University of Illinois at Springfield and a bachelor's degree in communications from Loyola University of Maryland. A former Evening Sun intern, Trif also has worked for news organizations in Springfield, Ill., Rochester, N.Y. and Wilmington, Del.


Amy Powers

Senior Vice President, Advertising

Amy Powers joined the Baltimore Sun Media Group as the vice president of advertising in March of 2015.  She is responsible for revenue initiatives across all BSMG print and digital products. Prior to joining the BSMG, she served as the vice president of advertising for the Daily Press Media Group in Newport News, Va.  Prior to that, Amy spent 10 years at the Chicago Tribune Media Group as the director of local media sales, the events and sponsorships manager, and in a variety of sales and sales management roles.  She joined Tribune Publishing in 2002 after four years in a sales role at CBS Radio in Chicago. Amy earned a bachelor's in marketing and communications and an MBA from Northern Illinois University.


Timothy J. Thomas

Senior Vice President, Targeted Media

After the Baltimore Sun Media Group acquired Capital-Gazette Communications, Tim Thomas was named publisher in September 2014. He oversees multiple publications in the Annapolis region, including the daily newspaper, The Capital, the Maryland Gazette (one of the oldest newspapers in the country), weekly papers, magazines and CapitalGazette.com. Tim also oversees the City Paper, Baltimore's alternative newspaper. Prior to Targeted Media, Tim was the senior vice president of business development for The Baltimore Sun Company and The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa., where he was responsible for growing company revenue and operating cash flow in non-traditional channels, including leading acquisitions and divestitures, digital subscriptions, business website development, content licensing and book publishing. Thomas joined BSMG in 1999 and has previously served as vice president of marketing and communications. Before joining the company, he worked for 15 years at Westinghouse/Northrop Grumman in various operations, research, strategic planning and business development positions, eventually leading the company's package sorting systems business. He graduated at the top of his class with a Masters in Business Administration from what is now Loyola University Maryland. Tim also earned an undergraduate degree in mass communications (journalism) from Towson University.

 


Trish McCarthy Carroll

Senior Vice President, Targeted Media

Trish McCarthy Carroll, publisher of the Carroll County Times since September 2014, is the senior vice president, targeted media for the Baltimore Sun Media Group. Carroll oversees the daily newspaper, Carroll County Times, related publications, coupon books and CarrollCountyTimes.com. She also has oversight for military publications SoundOff! and the APG News. Trish most recently served as BSMG's senior vice president for customer engagement. Prior to that, she was president of Patuxent Publishing in Howard County and Homestead Publishing in Harford County. In that position, she was responsible for BSMG's community newspapers, magazines, custom content, telephone directories, niche publications and websites. Prior to 2008, Carroll served as director of operations at The Olympian and at The Baltimore Sun in advertising, operations and circulation. She graduated from what is now Loyola University Maryland in business administration (management). Carroll serves on the Carroll County Community College Foundation Board, the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Board and the United Way Carroll County Partnership Board.

 


Christopher J. Manis

Vice President, Finance

Chris Manis was named vice president of finance for the Baltimore Sun Media Group in September 2014. Since joining the company in 2003, Chris has progressed through various roles within the finance department, including Financial Analyst, Financial Reporting Manager, Assistant Controller, and Controller. He oversees all aspects of the local finance organization and serves as a key liaison between local senior management and the centrally managed accounting, reporting, audit, and tax departments. Chris led The Sun through its transition to a privately held business, through its bankruptcy, through various departmental restructurings, and through the recent TPUB spin-off. He also oversaw the financial planning, modeling, diligence, and integration of BSMG's 2014 acquisitions of The Annapolis Capital, The Carroll County Times, and City Paper. Born and raised in Prince George's County, Chris received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Maryland at College Park and his CPA license in 2005. Chris began his career as an audit associate with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Baltimore.


Stephen G. Seidl

Senior Vice President, Operations and Technology

Steve Seidl was named senior vice president of operations at The Baltimore Sun in April 2005. He has responsibility for all prepress, imaging, printing, packaging, transportation, circulation distribution, equipment and facilities maintenance, and commercial printing sales at The Sun. In early 2009 he took on a regional role, adding those same responsibilities for the Allentown Morning Call. Steve began his professional career with Dow Jones & Company in 1983 as assistant production manager for The Wall Street Journal in Chicopee, Mass. He worked in this capacity at several of their production facilities around the country until 1987, when he became production manager for The Times Record in Brunswick, Maine. In 1990, Steve joined Harte-Hanks Shoppers in southern California and over the next eight years served as director in every one of their operations departments. Steve joined The Baltimore Sun in May 1998 as director of packaging, and grew his responsibilities in the positions of director of manufacturing, director of operations, and vice president of operations prior to his current position. During his career, Steve has led key initiatives in pagination, press expansions, new press installations, automating inserting, and robotic palletizing. Steve is a native of the Dayton, Ohio area and earned his Bachelor of Science degree in printing management, and an Associate in Applied Science in printing technology from Rochester Institute of Technology.


Gary Olszewski

Regional Director, Consumer Marketing

Born in Chicago, Gary started his newspaper career in 1977 at The Chicago Tribune. He was promoted to Director of Consumer Marketing for The Baltimore Sun in October 2000. Gary took on responsibility for a group of paid/free newspapers at the company's other business units in 2006 and was named Regional Director with responsibility for marketing and circulation at The Morning Call in 2010. In 2011, Gary helped introduce digital subscription sales for BaltimoreSun.com and later mcall.com -- the first Tribune websites to charge for digital access. More recently, he added print/digital marketing responsibility for Landmark newspapers purchased in 2014: The Capital, Maryland Gazette and Carroll County Times. Gary earned a master's degree in marketing from The Illinois Institute of Technology and a bachelor's degree in business from Lewis University. 


Renee Mutchnik

Director of Marketing

Renee joined The Baltimore Sun Media Group (BSMG) in 2007 as advertising manager for the entertainment, healthcare and education category. In August 2008, she became director of marketing for BSMG and in 2014 was also named director of marketing for The Morning Call Media Group. Her responsibilities include brand marketing of all publications, events, public relations and community outreach. Prior to joining BSMG, Renee was marketing director for a national theatrical promoter where she oversaw the marketing campaigns and public relations for Broadway touring productions, concert and comedy tours and urban theatre across the United States and Canada. Renee, a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, began her career as a media buyer The Miller Group, a Baltimore-based advertising agency, where she planned and placed radio, TV, print and outdoor advertising for its clients.  


Mike Houser

Regional Director, Circulation Operations

Mike Houser is the Regional Director of Circulation Operations for the Baltimore Sun Media Group and the Allentown Morning Call. Mike is responsible for the distribution of 99 distinct publications to home delivery subscribers and retail outlets throughout Maryland and the Lehigh Valley. Mike has led the operations team since 2007. Under his leadership The Sun has become the top performer in Tribune with the lowest cost per copies delivered. In addition, The Sun has consistently led Tribune with the best service metrics. Prior to his current role, Mike spent seven years working as the Sales and Retention Manager in the marketing department. Before joining Tribune, Mike spent eight years working for Gannett at The Reno Gazette-Journal, The Statesman Journal in Salem, Oregon, The Idaho Statesman and The Iowa City Press-Citizen.


Monica McMellon-Ajayi

Director, Human Resources

Monica's role is to lead the Human Resources function for The Baltimore Sun, The Morning Call, The Hartford Courant, and The Daily Press. She joined Tribune Publishing in April 2014. At the beginning of her first year, the human resources organization went through a transformation to support Tribune's new functionalized structure. Monica led her HR Team to operate within a matrixed and shared services environment through process improvement and nurturing. She also partnered in facilitating the integration and onboarding of employees from the Landmark acquisition. Her human resources career spans over 20 years in various industries -- engineering, health care, and publishing. Before joining Tribune Publishing, Monica was the HR Director for The American Nurses Association's Corporate Headquarters. From 2009-2012, she was the deputy HR leader at McClatchy, The Kansas City Star. Her educational background includes a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Rowan University in Glassboro, N.J., and a master's degree in Organizational Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
