Summer 2017 interns

Introducing The Baltimore Sun Media Group 2017 Summer Interns:

Michael Ares

I was born and raised in Whittier, Calif., in Los Angeles County. I graduated from California State University, Long Beach with a bachelor's degree in Journalism in May 2016. I have done photo internships with The San Francisco Examiner, The Philadelphia Inquirer and The Palm Beach Post. I hope someday to work for a large news publication, and am taking another step in that direction working as a photo/video intern for The Sun. In my spare time I like to go running, bike-riding and play basketball. I am also a huge fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and Angels.

Callie Caplan

I graduated in May from the University of Maryland, where I spent (too much) time as a senior staff writer and assistant sports editor for The Diamondback, the independent student newspaper. This past year, I got to follow the football team's first season under DJ Durkin and the men's basketball team's run to the NCAA tournament. I also spent the school year as an intern at The Washington Post, covering high school football and swimming. Last summer, I worked at USA Today Sports through the Association of Women in Sports Media's internship program, and I'm very excited to translate that experience into an amazing summer at my hometown paper in the sports department.

Mina Haq

I'm a rising senior journalism student at the University of Maryland and the editor in chief at The Diamondback, UMD's student newspaper. I just finished up a digital internship at USA TODAY, and spent the fall working in the Washington bureau of Capital News Service covering Maryland's congressional delegation. I hope to return to Washington one day to cover Capitol Hill, but right now I'm looking forward to spending my summer in Baltimore as the MDDC-Press Association intern working with the community publications.

Alex Mann

I am a rising senior at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. This summer I will be a reporting intern at the Capital Gazette in Annapolis. I am a managing editor for the Beltway Bulletin, a student-run publication focused on local politics, and the senior sports editor for Stories Beneath the Shell (SBS), another UMD student-run publication. Throughout my time with SBS and the Beltway Bulletin I've covered sports, local politics, campus events and the opioid epidemic. Last summer I interned at Living in Peru, an English-language publication in Lima, Peru. I was born in Washington, D.C., but have spent the better part of my life in Anne Arundel County.

Danielle Ohl

I am a recent graduate of the University of Maryland, where I studied multi-platform journalism. During college, I worked for The Diamondback, where I served as editor in chief during my senior year. I've interned for PBS-39, McClatchy's Washington Bureau and Newsday. When I'm not writing or reading news, I enjoy screaming about the Philadelphia Flyers and attempting to do yoga. I can make killer guacamole upon request. I will be working in Features.

Talia Richman

I'm a recent University of Maryland graduate, and I'll be working in the metro section as the Mary J. Corey intern. I spent four years at The Diamondback, where I reported on higher education, edited the news section and conducted the independent student newspaper's first Ouija board interview. I'm excited to be back at The Baltimore Sun after interning here two years ago. I've also held internships at The Oregonian, USA Today and The Dallas Morning News, my hometown paper. I'm always open to new taco recipes and podcast recommendations.

Catalina Righter

I graduated from Washington College in May 2017 with a degree in English. My senior year, I served as the editor-in-chief of The Elm and was the winner of the 2017 Sophie Kerr Prize. Previously I interned for the Kent County News. As a Manchester native, I'm looking forward to working for my hometown paper, the Carroll County Times, this summer. I really dig poetry, gardening and spending time on the water.

Michael Brice Saddler

I am a rising senior at the University of Maryland, studying journalism with a minor in Spanish. I was born in Baltimore City, where I lived for several years before moving to Baltimore County, where I've resided ever since. I've been fortunate enough to have journalism experience in both hard news and sports. I've interned at SBNation and Street Sense in D.C., as well as VICE Sports in Brooklyn, N.Y. I also served as a reporter and editor at The Diamondback, where I spent more than a year reporting on local crime. In my free time, I enjoy watching, writing about and generally obsessing over the NBA, particularly the Los Angeles Lakers. Also, I'm probably the best NBA2k player you'll ever meet. I'm ecstatic to be returning to the city as a metro reporting intern for The Sun this summer alongside some of my talented peers.
