Songs that Changed My Life

I wanted to share a couple songs I found, this past year, to be quite influential on my life. I must point out that while none of these songs were actually released in 2011, with good music, I really believe in timelessness.

First up is the song that gets me super amped up! If I want to dance, cheer up, play with my dog, even clean my house…this song energizes me:

Trampled by Turtles “Wait so Long”

While I grew up listening to some bluegrass it wasn’t until this past year that I really started to get serious about listening to it. Typically a bluegrass concert can actually keep my attention the entire show…mainly because I love to dance (despite my best efforts, yes, I am a bad dancer).  This is some straight up foot stompin’, loose your mind kind of stuff and I think we all need a little bit that in our lives to loosen up!

Next up is from the ever so wonderful Johnny Cash.  This song is one that makes me think. It can definitely be interpreted differently for each listener individually. It makes me think about how small we are in this big world and how short life is:

Johnny Cash “God’s Gonna Cut You Down”

Almost every time I hear this song, no matter what I’m doing, I feel like I need to stop and just listen. “You can run on for a long time…sooner or later God will cut you down.” It’s so funny because it’s like you can run as much as you want but at the end of the day you’re going to have to stop. You can’t act in vain. We need songs to make us think…think about life, think about death.

Lastly is the song that brings nostalgia. This song helps me reflect on things of the past and be thankful for each experience I’ve been so fortunate to have. The first time I ever heard this song I was speechless. Literally…speechless:

Bon Iver “I Can’t Make You Love Me/Nick of Time”

While it is definitely a song of sadness and pain it’s also a song of honesty.  My main theme going into 2012 is to be completely honest with who I am, what I want, etc. Finding this song at the end of 2011 was so instrumental in that shift. It helps put things back into perspective by remembering a time that once was not so easy.

Take some time and refelct back on some of the your favorite songs of 2011. Look at why they impacted you, what they made you feel, etc. Then step into 2012 with some new wisdom!

Happy Listening!
Emily
